Playing the piano and horn in my childhood was the only way for me to express my emotions when I couldn’t safely do so in many difficult situations I faced. I took weekly lessons, had teachers who believed in me, improved my fluency in playing both instruments and experienced joy. It wasn’t until I started my own full-time teaching studio 20 years ago that I realized the level of empowerment and sound therapy I could offer my students by providing choices for them to select certain pieces to practice, learn and perform. Students that demonstrated sadness or repressed anger while seated next to me in music lessons could be invited to play musical pieces that would express those emotions safely without the need for us to have a conversation about the difficult emotions they seemed to be holding onto. The power of sound was transformative in shifting difficult emotions without any exchange of words.
After obtaining my Master of Music degree I was a full-time private music teacher and coached students in musical expression of difficult emotions while I dove into exploring Emotional Intelligence for myself. I participated in personal development groups that some of my friends called "trauma camps" as I dealt with blocked emotions from my own childhood trauma. As I opened myself up to Emotional Intelligence and really feeling my own difficult emotions I became curious about how intentionally creating music and choosing certain music to listen to can shift and uplift our moods.
By 2013, I completed a Masters in Sound Reiki (Sound Reiki Institute) and a Healing Sounds certificate from the Sound Healers Association (Jonathan Goldman). I have since worked with individuals to release deep-rooted tension that has caused emotional and physical discomfort and helped people feel more relaxed and experience greater sleep at night.
Especially now, in our pandemic situation, people may experience more intense emotions and more fluctuating emotions because of the inability to predict our safety and the recommended restrictions on social interactions. Taking music lessons or experiencing Sound Healing Energy can help you manage your difficult emotions, by quieting your mind, bringing you into the present moment and releasing stress that is no longer needed.
